School ReOpening Update

Hello ECPS families,

We hope you and your family have had an enjoyable summer. We have missed you and are looking forward to welcoming our students back to learning.

I want to start by thanking you for your strength, patience and feedback during this challenging time. We all share the same goal: ensuring our students have access to a high-quality education in a safe, healthy learning environment. Our district and school leaders have worked long, hard hours for weeks to ensure we accomplish this goal.

Our board has approved a plan for our district for the beginning of the 2020 - 2021 school year. All students and parents will be invited to attend an in-person orientation during the first week of school. During weeks 2 - 6, the majority of our students will learn remotely. After four weeks, we will review current Covid-19 metrics to make a plan for the second six weeks. Some students who receive specialized education services may have the opportunity to receive these services in-person. Your child's school will be in contact with you if this is the case. We plan to transition to in-person classes when it is safe to do so. When in-person classes resume, families may choose to remain with an online learning plan if they are not ready to send their students back to the school building.

During the remote learning phase of our plan, students will engage in a combination of virtual learning led by a teacher, independent online learning, and offline learning.

The first day for all traditional schools and iZone schools (Coker-Wimberly, Phillips, North Edgecombe) is scheduled for August 17, 2020. Edgecombe Early College High School’s first day will be August 6, 2020. Someone from your student’s school will reach out to you to schedule your in-person orientation.

The health, safety and well-being of our students and staff were our top priority as we made these decisions. Please know that we did not do so lightly. We do not have every answer and we will likely need to make adjustments as we go, but we are committed to learning and improving together.
