This Friday, nearly 1,000 cyclists passed by South Edgecombe Middle School on their way to Emerald Isle from Banner Elk. Our particular leg of the trip includes a 61 mile trek from Tarboro to Kinston. These cyclists are part of the 21 Annual Cycle NC Mountains to Coast Bike Ride. Students made signs and gathered to cheer the cyclists on as they passed by SEMS.
The first Cycle North Carolina Mountains to Coast Ride was held in 1999. The inaugural ride was a two-week tour covering terrain from Murphy to Manteo. In the twenty-one years since, the Mountains to Coast Ride has traversed the state using a different week-long route each year. The ride has stopped overnight in more than 100 North Carolina towns and passed through over 800 North Carolina communities. The Mountains to Coast Ride is not a race, but a recreational trek across the state using scenic back roads. The ride is designed to promote physical fitness, good health and the scenic beauty of North Carolina. For more information, visit the Cycle NC Mountains to Coast Website.
