About The School:

South Edgecombe Middle school serves 369 students in grades 6-8 from the rural communities of Pinetops, Crisp, Macclesfield, Conetoe and surrounding areas. We are centrally located to larger municipalities in Eastern North Carolina such as Tarboro, Rocky Mount, Wilson, and Greenville. Our proximity to these cities gives us access to resources and partnerships that support both our students and staff. We are a true community school as many of our students’ parents attended middle school here and their grandparents attended high school on our campus! These connections to the community and deep family roots garner tremendous pride and support, both in and for our school! At South we function as a school family where student achievement and well-being are central to every decision that we make. Our motto of “Open Hearts. Open Minds. Open Doors.” is the foundation for our service to our school community and is embedded in our daily efforts to provide our students with opportunities that create hope, build resilience, and cultivate dreams!

VISION: All SEMS scholars will graduate prepared to design their own futures, navigate change, and make the world a better place.

EQUITY VISION: SEMS will be a place where opportunities are no longer predicted by social, cultural, or economic factors.

MISSION: The SEMS community will collaborate to graduate all students ready to achieve success in a rapidly changing world.

CORE VALUES: COMMUNITY, CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT, RELATIONSHIPS, RIGOROUS CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION, SAFE SCHOOLS

Motto: "Open Hearts. Open Minds. Open Doors."

School Initiatives:

Our flagship initiative at South Edgecombe is our Academic Support program. This course provides an opportunity for all students to receive social emotional support and develop transferable life skills while supplementing academic knowledge and introducing global competencies. Academic Support teachers serve as Academic Advisors for students to ensure that they are making adequate progress in their core classes by monitoring grades and attendance while maintaining contacts with parents. Additionally, students are provided with intervention and/or enrichment in Math and ELA during this class using small-group instruction as well as digital learning programs such as iReady, MobyMax, and IXL. We have one Academic Support teacher on each grade level and all students attend this class daily. The Academic Support class provides the flexibility to take a comprehensive approach to growing productive citizens, while promoting the pursuit of passions and supporting core content.

Teacher Support:

South Edgecombe Middle School provides wrap-around support for all teachers and staff members. Examples of supports include:

District mentors, Site-based mentors, Grade Level and Vertical PLCs, Small teaching teams to promote collaboration and relationship building, Individualized Professional Development opportunities, Scheduling to protect planning, collaboration, and individualized PD time, 1:1 Coaching from administration and Multi-classroom Leaders (MCLs).

Additionally, we offer advanced teaching roles through Opportunity Culture which support professional development in both content and instructional practices while providing opportunities for professional advancement.
